Let’s face it, movie critics can have a lot of power and what they say can either bring in visitors or keep them away (most of the time). But have you ever decided to keep track of those critics who can’t seem to get it right?
This all began when I noticed that the same critics were always praising some of the worst movies ever released. The most notorious of these film critics is Peter Hammond from Maxim Magazine. In fact, if I ever see a movie that’s only being praised by Peter Hammond in the trailer, I automatically skip it. Now I’m sure that our tastes in movies probably differ, so let me begin by introducing some of his more notable quotes:
Running Scared – "Paul Walker's best performance. A mind-bending, extreme movie experience."
The Break-Up – "One of the best American comedies in years."
The Guardian – "Heart-stopping action! If you’re looking for pure screen excitement look no further. Dives into the heart of a true hero. Stirring and exhilarating! An unforgettable motion picture experience. The Guardian will remind you why Kevin Costner became a star. A breakthrough performance from Ashton Kutcher."
Find Me Guilty – "Vin Diesel is a complete revelation"
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift – "Strap yourself in for a blistering, super-charged ride. This time around the fast and furious action is simply off the charts!"
The Shaggy Dog – "A doggone hilarious treat!"
In 2006, Peter Hammond gave a whopping 69 praises (matched only by Peter Travers). Here is a great site where you can find more information on other notable critics like Jeffrey Lyons (NBC), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Earl Dittman (Wireless Magazine): Hollywood Bitch Slap. I was relieved when I saw that I am not the only crazy person out there that notices these bogus reviews.
So the next time you’re in the video store or a theater and you see any of these critics associated with a film…move on to the next one.
