Gondola Rides

Gondola Ride

A gondola is the long, flat-bottomed boat of Venice, steered by a gondolier who stands at the stern and rows with a single oar. You don't have to fly to Italy to ride one. Venetian-style gondola rides operate on harbors, canals, lakes and resort waterways in a number of American cities, ranging from short shared loops at resorts to private cruises of an hour or so for a couple or a small party.

Expect a slow, quiet glide close to the water, often past waterfront homes, marinas or city lights. Some operators offer packages with blankets, flowers or treats, some let you bring your own food and wine, and some gondoliers sing. The word gondola also covers the enclosed cable cars at ski areas and mountain towns, which lift you high above the trees for wide views and often run in summer as well as winter.

The Date Activity

A gondola ride is about as romantic as an outing gets, which makes it best for an anniversary, a birthday, a proposal or a relationship that's already going well. You'll sit close under a blanket with a stranger rowing behind you, so it can feel like a lot for a first date. Book around sunset or after dark, when the water reflects the lights.

The ride itself is short, so build the evening around it, with dinner by the water before and dessert or a stroll afterward. For a full day out, pair it with the aquarium or a walk on the beach. Planning a proposal? Tell the operator when you book; many are glad to help with timing, music or photos.

On Your Own / With Friends

Sharing a gondola with another couple or a few friends is a lovely way to mark a birthday or anniversary, and some operators have larger boats or several gondolas for groups and wedding parties. A water gondola isn't really a solo activity, but an aerial gondola works well alone. It's a favorite of photographers and an easy way to reach a mountain trail or a high lookout without the climb.

Good to Know

Reserve ahead, especially around Valentine's Day, holidays and summer weekends. Ask whether the ride is private or shared, how long it lasts and what you can bring on board, since rules on alcohol vary by location. Evenings on the water get cool, so bring a layer even in summer. Rides may be rescheduled for wind or storms, so check the weather policy when you book. Aerial gondolas have their own seasons and closing times, and some stop running in high winds, so check before you drive up.
