Big (COMEDY - 1988 - Starring Tom Hanks & Elizabeth Perkins): Remember when you were a kid and you wished that you could be grown up? After not being allowed to ride the rollercoaster at the fairground, 12 year old Josh Baskin makes a wish to an old fortune machine that he could be “big”. The next morning Josh wakes up as a 30 year old man (played by Tom Hanks) but inside he is still that same 12 year old boy. After freaking his mother out, Josh heads over to New York with his best friend and begins to experience life the life he wished for. Will Josh want to remain “big” or will he want to go back to normal?
Listening and communication are the basic ingredients of every successful relationship. However, it seems that no matter how great of a listener you are, or how deeply you love each other, all it takes is one bad argument to unravel the ties that have bound you together.
When fighting or engaged in an argument, there are some basic ground rules that will keep you fighting fair and help you move past your issues while maintaining your love and respect for each other. Arguments can be a healthy and normal part of a relationship. They are necessary for instilling change and helping a couple to gather their strengths and become a united front.
Yet, if the skills needed to argue respectfully are lacking, either member may experience anger, rage, hostility, or lack of self-control and create damage to the relationship that is never resolved. Here are some basic skills that can ensure your relationship survives the tough times as you learn to fight fair.
In times past, it was common for men to pay for everything when it came to dating. However, times have changed and women have fought for equal rights, including the right to pay for their fair share of the date.
When it comes to dating, you can never assume that the man will always pay. It is a good idea to know ahead of time who is going to pay for the date, and if you are a woman, to be prepared to pay for your fair share, so there are no awkward moments towards the end of the evening. Here are some guidelines to consider to help ensure that your date isn’t stressed due to financial tension.
Since today was our 6 month anniversary, I decided to take my girlfriend Liz to the Los Angeles Zoo. The weather was great so I wanted to take advantage of it by doing something fun outdoors.
12:00pm – We arrived at the Zoo at Noon and I was surprised that there was no charge for parking. You would think that finding parking would be almost impossible, but there were a ton of open spaces right near the entrance.
At first glance, the line to purchase tickets looks really intimidating, but it does move really quickly. We got to the ticket window in about 25 minutes and the price of admission was a reasonable $10 per person (children get in for $5).
Regardless of how you feel about Tom Cruise (i.e. his beliefs, couch jumping, etc.), one can’t deny that he really is a remarkable actor. After the Mission Impossible Trilogy (some purists will argue that there was only one true trilogy, but never mind that) and lackluster films like War of the Worlds and Eyes Wide Shut, I sometimes forget what Tom Cruise is really capable of. Cruise is an extremely versatile actor and should really be remembered for his performances in films such as Risky Business, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, and my favorite – Magnolia. Those are all great films, but since we’re discussing date movies, let’s get to Jerry Maguire.
Jerry Maguire (ROMANCE – 1996 – Starring Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Renee Zellweger): In Jerry Maguire, Tom Cruise plays a successful sports agent who begins to question the morality of his work. After a dramatic scene at the office, he’s left with an egomaniacal athlete (played by Cuba Gooding Jr. who went on to win an Academy Award), a single mother (Renee Zellweger), and a goldfish. It’s a great story about starting over, staying true to yourself, and most importantly – taking a chance on others. The film has some good comedy and the romance is not too corny…so it should appeal to most tastes.
On a side note, even though date flicks are usually associated with the romantic genre, I’ll be sure to feature some other themes in the next few weeks.
You may have heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” and when it comes to dating, the first impression can make or break your future relationship. Studies have shown that the first 30 seconds of your first impression can determine whether or not each person will remain interested in pursuing communication. Therefore, if you like what you see and want to give a relationship a try, it is imperative that your first impression is one that will last and leave him or her wanting to get to know more about you.
We always wondered how many people actually end up doing the things we suggest…so this was really refreshing.
Last week we received an email from one of our users, Alan Oratovsky, thanking us for helping him plan his date. Alan works as a paramedic in Riverside, California and he wanted to do something really special and romantic for his girlfriend. He began by taking a 45-minute helicopter tour of Los Angeles at sunset and finished it off with a candlelight dinner by the beach.
Here are some photos that Alan included from his helicopter ride:
If you had a great date and want to share it with others, send us the details and we’ll put it up
When a couple first falls in love, romance seems to come naturally. They stay on the phone with each other until all hours of the night, can’t bear to be apart from each other, and count the seconds until they can see each other again. It is natural that this couple will secure their newly found love with a commitment. Whether it is marriage, or a union that symbolizes their dedication to each other, every couple is convinced that their relationship will be the one that is driven by fiery passion and will never run cold.
It is inevitable! After a certain period of time, you and your partner will encounter moments when you feel less intimate with one another. Lack of intimacy can be emotional, physical, or both. Often, these are passing phases in a relationship, but due to the stress that lack of intimacy can cause, many relationships fail to bounce back after this period. There are a number of things that can decrease the level of intimacy in a relationship. Some of these include:
You’ve been together for a long time, but now you can’t wait to be single again. You’ve been fighting constantly, never seem to agree on anything, and the thought of spending a night together bores you terribly. To top it off, you’ve been thinking that maybe it is time to call it quits.
